Our topic for the next few weeks will be Around the World. This week, we focussed on mainl two countries: the USA and Japan. On Tuesday 4th July, we celebrated American Independence Day. Everyone wore red, blue or white - the colours of the American flag. We watched the video of an Independence Day parade and some of us enjoyed waving our flags together. We ate doughnuts after spreading some chocolate on them. While we were watching the parade, we also tried some popcorn - we even heard the corn pop while cooking in the microwave. On Thursday we heard a Japanese story of ‘Tanabata’ (Star Festival). We talked about what we wish for next year and wrote our wishes on colourful pieces of paper. Many of us made paper chains to put on the tree. On Friday we decorated the trees in our garden with our wishes and other decorations and wished the best for next year. On top of that, our role play area has turned into an airport and the beach. Everyone enjoyed going on a trip with their hand-made passport, which was ‘stamped’ at the airport. The beach was so popular it was always overcrowded. Reception children also enjoyed weighing different objects with bucket balances and ordered them by weight.
